Bertelsmann Opens a Corporate Center in India
The international media company Bertelsmann is increasing its footprint in the Asian growth region. Thomas Rabe, Chairman & CEO of Bertelsmann AG, opened the global media group’s new Corporate Center in New Delhi. The office will support the further expansion of Bertelsmann's activities in India, for example by identifying investment opportunities for Bertelsmann and its divisions and building new businesses. This is Bertelsmann’s second head office in Asia; the Group has had a representative office in China since 2006.
Bertelsmann’s Chairman & CEO Thomas Rabe stated: “India is an important market for our international growth. The country’s demographic, economic and technological development offers a lot of opportunities for a future-oriented company like Bertelsmann. We will continue to expand our operations in India, particularly in the digital media business. We also want to be actively involved in promising new areas such as education in India. Our new Corporate Center gives Bertelsmann a central point of interaction and contact, both for our own businesses and for external partners.”
All of Bertelsmann’s divisions already have operations in India. RTL Group is currently setting up two TV channels here with a national partner; Fremantle Media, RTL Group’s production arm, does business in India with hit franchises like “Indian Idol”, “The X Factor” and “Got Talent.” The book-publishing subsidiary Random House India has been publishing books in India since 2005. Gruner + Jahr acquired a majority stake in the Indian magazine publishing company Maxposure in 2011. Arvato India has been active in the customer services and marketing sector and in e-commerce since 2003. All corporate divisions will significantly expand their operations in India in the years ahead.
The German acting Ambassador to India, Cord Meier-Klodt, welcomed Bertelsmann: “It is a great pleasure to learn that Bertelsmann, Germany's famous media company is opening its Corporate Centre in India, indeed an important decision by the company to strengthen its existence in the rapidly expanding Indian market. Looking at Bertelsmann's portfolio from
print media to TV channels, I much appreciate this step since it enriches Germany’s presence in India. It underlines that our both countries share much more than the so often quoted 'German machines to India and Indian IT to Germany'. I take this opportunity to wish
Bertelsmann all success in achieving its plans in India.”
The Corporate Center’s opening ceremony was attended by 120 guests from politics, business and the media, including Amitabh Jhunjhunwala of the Reliance ADAG group. Bertelsmann showcased some of its existing talents with the X-factor talents, the Nirmitee Group and Piyush Kapoor and the Random House author and comedian Cyrus Broacha providing entertainment highlights at the ceremony.
The new Bertelsmann company in India will be led by Pankaj Makkar, a graduate of the Group’s internal "Bertelsmann Entrepreneur Program". The new Corporate Center office is located in Noida, a suburb of the capital New Delhi. In addition to the center that has now opened here, Bertelsmann has Corporate Centers in Beijing, New York and Gütersloh, and representative offices in Berlin and Brussels.
